Featured in our June 2021 ‘Summer Soleil’ box, Cylindropuntia (“Mini Cholla”) is an adorable miniature cultivar of much larger Cane Cholla. These minis are bred for container gardening and perfect for a sunny windowsill. Read on to learn more!
Growing Habits
Mini Cholla is a species of cacti native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Stems grow long and cylindrical with barbs that will easily stick to anything, including you!
Dormancy
Growing season is typically from early Spring to mid Summer (from about March to July). Dormancy occurs in the winter months. Water less often during this time.
Hardiness
Hardiness refers to the coldest a plant can tolerate. Mini Cholla is hardy to 32F but always protect from frost.
Flowering
Mini Cholla bloom from April through June and produce purple/magenta flowers.
Basic Care
- Soil: A well-draining soil with amendments such as perlite, pumice, or course sand.
- Light: Provide lots of bright sunlight but protect from hot scorching summer sun.
- Water: Mini but mighty–Mini Cholla can survive with little to no water! But water regularly in the hotter months to keep them happy, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

I hope I get to see it flowering 😉
